The temperatures are dropping and the wind grows stronger with each passing day. In a makeshift shelter, a group of young siblings huddle around a kerosene heater to stay warm. I want to wrap these vulnerable children in a cozy blanket and keep them safe and warm. As a mother myself, I can't even begin to imagine the worry their parents must feel.
During my time as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, I've been so fortunate to meet with displaced families and listen to their stories. Hearing about the lives refugees left behind, I've often asked myself: What makes us any different from those forced to flee for safety?
Luck is all that separates us.
